What this solves
The Azores is one of the world's best whale-watching destinations, but the marketing "year-round" hides the fact that the species you'll see changes dramatically by month. Sperm whales live here permanently — that part is true. Blue whales pass through in spring on migration. Humpbacks arrive in late winter and stay into summer. Dolphins are everywhere.
This tool takes your month and your island choice and tells you what to expect, the sea-state likelihood, and the trade-off between islands. Picking Pico over São Miguel in summer matters — the operators have to be licensed differently, and trip lengths differ.

Pick month + island. The card updates.
How to read the result
- Species Likelihood: the chance of seeing your target species on a 3-hour trip. "Low" means possible but you'd want a 2nd day.
- Sea state: average Beaufort scale for that month. 0–2 is comfortable. 1+ may be cancelled by sitting-prone yachts.
- Island choice: São Miguel has more operators and is the entry point. Pico has the deep water close to shore — best for big whales.
- Permit note: every operator needs an Azores whale-watching permit. The permit is per-vessel, per-season, not per-spot.

Limitations
- Animals are wild. A "high likelihood" month can still give you a flat-calm day with no whales. Operators are honest about this.
- Boat size and licence vary by operator. A "whale-watching permit" doesn't mean the boat is large or stable. Ask for boat length and licence number.
- São Miguel vs Pico is partly a travel logistics choice. Pico is harder to reach (ferry or flight to Faial, then drive) but the deep water is closer.
- Swim-with-dolphins is offered at some operators. This is contested — many naturalists consider it stressful for the animals. Prefer observation trips.
FAQ
When can I see a blue whale?
March–June is the migration window. April–May are peak. From Pico or São Miguel with a full-day trip — they're offshore.
São Miguel or Pico?
São Miguel: easier access, more operators, good for first-timers. Pico: deeper water closer, better for big whales, less crowded. If you have only 2 days, São Miguel.
Will I get sea-sick?
Possibly. Take the tablet (meclizine) 1 hour before. Pick a bigger boat. If you know you're sensitive, ask for the morning departure with calmer winds.
What's the cheapest time to go?
October–April (except Christmas / Easter). Flights and boats are quieter. Sperm whales are present year-round.
