Madeira hike tier picker

Match a Madeiran hike to your fitness, your weather and your day — without ending up at altitude in fog.

What this solves

Madeira has a list of "famous hikes" that all sound amazing in the guidebook and behave very differently on the ground. The PR1 (Pico do Arieiro → Pico Ruivo) is 7 hours, 1500m of gain, exposed ridges, and closes when wind exceeds 60 km/h — which happens more in winter than you'd expect. The 25 Fontes levada is gentle and easy but the road to the start has switchbacks that close for maintenance.

This tool ranks Madeira's most-cited hikes by your inputs: fitness, weather tolerance, time, and how much altitude you want. It also tells you when a famous hike is the wrong choice.

    FAQ

Is Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo closed?

Often. Wind >60 km/h, snow/ice, or maintenance. Check the IFCN (Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza) status before you drive to Arieiro.

Do I need a guide for Arieiro to Ruivo?

Not legally for the trail itself, but for winter / fog conditions a guide is recommended. For tunnel sections in summer, no.

Which hike is best in fog?

Fanal — the fog is the point. Arieiro to Ruivo in fog is a serious mistake; go elsewhere.

Can I do 25 Fontes with a buggy?

The cobbled first km is rough on buggy wheels. Possible with a hiking carrier. Not recommended.
