What this solves
Portugal has several official GR (Grande Rota) trails — the long-distance hiking paths marked with red-and-white blazes, equivalent to Spain's GR or France's GR. They vary from 200 km to 600 km, from coastal to mountain, from rural to remote. Most visitors pick the most famous (GR22, Algarve coastal) and don't realise GR11 is the better scenic walk or GR50 is for serious walkers.
This tool takes your days, your preferred terrain, your fitness and your starting point — and returns the GR trails that fit. It also tells you when a trail is the wrong choice.
Pick your GR trail
All four inputs matter.
How to read the result
- Top match: the trail that fits all your answers. If two are tied, pick the one starting/ending closer to your travel logistics.
- Days vs length: a 200 km class doesn't fit 2 days. The tool filters out impossible pairings and warns on tight ones.
- Terrain tag: the dominant terrain. Even a "mountain" GR has coastal stretches; even a "coastal" GR has uphill bits.
- Season: some GR trails have seasonal closures (GR22 sand-hauled sections in winter; mountain GRs snow in winter).
Portuguese GR trail reference (2026)
| Trail | Length | Region | Terrain | Days @ 25 km | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GR22 — Trilho dos Pescadores | 200 km | Algarve (coastal) | Coastal cliffs + village | 7–10 | The famous one. Sagres → Tavira. Coastal. Mid-Atlantic. |
| GR11 — Beira Alta | 230 km | Beira Interior | Mountain + rural | 9–12 | Viseu → Almeida. Mountain landscapes. Quieter. |
| GR50 — Minhotos | 320 km | Minho (north) | Mountain + rural | 12–16 | Ponte da Barca → Caminha. Tough but spectacular. |
| GR1 — Portugal coastal north | 450 km | Porto → Minho | Coastal + rural | 18–22 | Porto → Caminha along coast. Long commitment. |
| GR34 — GR de Sintra | 45 km | Sintra | Mountain + coast | 2–3 | Sintra mountain loop. Easy weekend. |
| GR15 — Maciço de Sicó | 200 km | Central Portugal | Mountain + rural | 8–10 | Sicó-de-Amorim loop. Less touristy. |
| Rota Vicentina (Fishermen's Trail) | 120 km | SW coast | Coastal | 5–7 | Sines → Odeceixe. Often grouped with GR22. |
| PR (small circular) | 5–25 km | Various | All | half–1 day | PR1, PR2... Per-region day hikes. Yellow blazes. |
| Trilhos (day hikes) | 5–30 km | Various | All | half–1 day | Trilhos pedestres. Day-hike class. |
GR (red-white blaze) = official long-distance. PR (yellow-green blaze) = short circular. Trilhos = regional day hikes.
Limitations
- Signage is not perfect. Blazes fade; off-route recovery adds 2–3 km/day. Carry offline GPS.
- Accommodation is sparse on some sections (GR50 in particular). Plan stays in advance for shoulder season.
- Coastal trails like GR22 have cliff exposure. Wind & spray are real; weather windows matter.
- Total days are based on a 25 km/day average. Slower walkers (15 km) or families with kids need 1.5–2× the days.
FAQ
What's the difference between GR, PR, and Trilhos?
GR = long-distance, red-white blazes. PR = small circular, yellow-green blazes, day hikes. Trilhos = regional day-hike circuits. GR requires days; PR and Trilhos don't.
Can I do GR22 in 4 days?
Yes, with 50 km/day — strong walker, light pack. Most people need 7–10 days for GR22 to enjoy it.
Is GR22 Algarve too touristy?
Mid-section is fine. Sagres / Lagos stretch is busier. April or October is the shoulder.
What's the quietest Portuguese GR?
GR11 (Beira Alta) and GR15 (Sicó) are much quieter than GR22. GR50 (Minho) has scenery but fewer hikers.
