What this solves
The Douro Valley is one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions — terraced hillsides, Port at source, and a tourist infrastructure built around it. The choices that matter are: how do you get there (CP train from São Bento is €22.50 one-way / €32.50 return), how many wineries you actually want to visit (4 in one day is a marathon), and whether self-drive or train beats group-tour.
This tool takes four inputs — your group size, your preferred transport, your vineyard count and your scenic-vs-convenience priority — and returns a complete day plan with cost math. It also flags the mistakes: 5 wineries and 1 transport change in a single day, or a self-drive plan that doesn't account for the winding N-222.
Plan your Douro day
Adjust the four inputs.
How to read the result
- Day plan: the itinerary the four answers produced. Each item has a time and a cost (per person).
- Per-person cost: based on group sharing transport. 1-person groups should expect roughly 2× the per-person number.
- Scenic priority: the N-222 is the scenic road. Self-drive + scenic → expect 1.5× the transit time for photo stops.
- "Don't do this": the tool will warn if you picked 4 wineries + boat (or another unrealistic pairing).
Douro winery reference (2026)
| Quinta | Region | Tasting € | Tour € | Reservation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quinta do Tedo | Cima Corgo | 15–25 | incl. | Strongly recommended. Owner-present tastings. Mid-range. |
| Quinta do Crasto | Cima Corgo | 20–35 | incl. | Iconic views. Higher-end. Book weeks ahead in Sep–Oct. |
| Quinta do Bomfim | Douro Superior | 15–25 | incl. | Owned by Symington (Port). Great for Port tasting. Closer to Pinhão. |
| Quinta de la Rosa | Cima Corgo | 12–20 | incl. | Family-run. Lighter style. Walking-friendly. |
| Quinta do Pôpa | Douro Superior | 12–18 | incl. | Young winemaker, modern style. Off the bus route. |
| Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo | Douro Superior | 18–28 | incl. | Wine hotel + tasting. Multi-day option. |
| Quinta dos Murças | Cima Corgo | 12–18 | incl. | Associação member. Quiet. Off the bus route. |
Tasting = 3–5 wines + flies; Tour = vineyard + cellar + tasting (1.5–2 h).
Limitations
- This tool models a single day. The Douro is better with 2 days — overnight at a quinta cuts the transit cost and increases the count.
- Self-drive assumes you book a hire car from Porto the night before. Pinhão doesn't have a 24h hire desk.
- Train requires you to either pre-book a taxi from Pinhão station or join a guided train tour. Standing taxi drivers are very rare.
- Wine-tasting capacity: 4 wineries × 4 hours each = 16 hours. You can't actually do this in a day. The recommendations respect this.
FAQ
Is the train or car better?
Train (€22.50/€32.50 one-way/return) is scenic and avoids the N-222's switchbacks. Car gives you 3–4 stops instead of doubling. Train + taxi from Pinhão is the elegant option for 2 wineries.
When is harvest?
September to early October. Vineyards open lagares for tourists. Accommodation sells out — book in late June.
Is the boat worth €24?
The Porto barco rabelo 1-hour upriver is romantic but it's not a Douro trip — it's a river cruise. For Douro wine, you need wheels or train.
Can I do 4 wineries in a day?
Physically yes (with self-drive and 1 hour per stop), but the 4th tasting is mostly wasted. 2–3 is the realistic cap.
