Portugal intercity: train vs coach vs fly

CP train vs Rede Expressos vs TAP / Air Europa — ranked by route, advance purchase and station-to-station reality, not centre-to-centre marketing.

What this solves

"Take the train from Lisbon to Porto" is the standard advice. It is right about half the time. For Lisbon to Évora it's almost always the answer. For Lisbon to Faro in July it's rarely the answer — TAP's α-promo pushes the network down a tier, and the TAPair discount on a €0.55-€0.65 fare beats coach time on a hot day.

This tool ranks the three options (CP Intercidades / Alfa Pendular, Rede Expressos / FlixBus, low-cost airline) using four inputs: route (the actual station pair, not the city-centre-to-city-centre marketing line), advance-purchase window, group size, and whether you have to be at a specific station at the other end. It also surfaces α-promo windows on TAP/Air Europa (typical 60–90 day, 6–8 weeks before departure) which most comparison sites miss.

How to read the result

"Door-to-door" includes the Lisbon metro ride to Santa Apolónia (or Rossio / Oriente), the 30-minute CP baggage rule, and the metro ride out of Porto Campanhã to your Airbnb. The marketing time of "2h45m time on the train" is rarely the comparison time it is marketed as.

For Lisbon–Faro, the "Low-cost airline" row is gated by airport transfer time: Lisbon airport → city centre is 20–35 min, Faro airport → beach is 20 min by bus or €15 by taxi. Add 30 min check-in at LIS. This wipes out the time advantage of flying for most Lisbon-based trips.

Limitations

FAQ

Is Alfa Pendular worth the upgrade over Intercidades?

Only if you need the time. Pendular cuts 25 min on Lisbon–Porto but costs €10–€15 more. For an early flight next morning, yes; for a slow Sunday, no.

Can I book a train at the station on the day?

Yes, but at the walk-up fare. CP enforces a minimum on fare for any departure within ~1h. Avoid São Bento station for walk-up tickets — the queue is 20–30 min on Saturdays.

Are coach seats assigned?

Rede Expressos and FlixBus use free seating with a small preference for online check-in. There is no seat reservation like on trains.

When is the train actually faster than trains + 1 stop?

Only when the rail line has a direct Intercidades service. Lisbon–Faro via the smaller version (Cascais, Setúbal) of the Linha do Sul takes 5+ hours and is not on the comparison.
