What this solves
Most Portugal budget articles quote a single number — "€70 a day" — and leave it there. The truth is that the difference between a budget backpacker week in Lisbon and a mid-range couple's week in the Algarve can be a factor of three, and the spread widens further when you include Sintra day-trips, wine tastings, the new Lisbon tourist tax, and inter-city trains.
This calculator takes four inputs — number of days, your dominant city tier, your travel style, and how many paid activities you'll add — and returns a daily and total figure broken down across accommodation, food, local transit, and activities. The hidden tourist tax (€1–2 per night in Lisbon, Porto, and most Algarve municipalities since 2024, with extended rates in 2026) is folded in so the total is what your card actually gets charged for.

How to read the result
- Daily figure is per person, averaged across the whole trip. It assumes you share a room — solo travellers usually pay +40–60% on accommodation.
- Total multiplies daily × people × nights + activities + tourist tax. It is an internal transfer (no flights) reference, not a quote.
- Activities are priced separately because they swing widely: a Sintra day is €30–€60 (train + 2 entries); a Port cellar tasting is €15–€80.
- Real life throws surprises: a €25 seafood dinner in Sesimbra, a €90 taxi from the airport, a €200 ceramics shopping spree. Budget at the top of the range or you'll feel it.

Tourist tax (2026): €1–2/night in Lisbon, Porto, and most Algarve councils; €0.50–€1 in smaller municipalities. Max 7 consecutive nights charged. Already included in the calculator total.
Limitations
- Inter-city transport (Lisbon ↔ Porto, Lisbon ↔ Faro) is not included — that adds €20–€45 per leg by train or €30–€80 by budget airline.
- Car rental, parking, and fuel are not in the daily figure. A week car in the Algarve is €250–€450 plus €30–€60 fuel.
- Activities budget is a per-day average. A €100 hot-air balloon in Alentejo or a €350 private boat charter skews the trip total significantly.
- Currency conversion, foreign transaction fees, and ATM withdrawal costs are not included — use the ATM fee optimiser for that.
FAQ
Is Lisbon really that much more expensive than Porto?
Yes — about 10–15% on hotels and restaurants. The bigger spread is between Lisbon and inland: a €90 hotel in Lisbon can be €55 in Évora for the same star rating. The Algarve is comparable to Lisbon in summer and 30% cheaper in winter.
When does the tourist tax apply?
Since 2024, Lisbon and Porto charge €2/night (max 7 nights). The Algarve councils charge €1–€1.50 in summer. Inland municipalities often charge nothing. The tax applies to anyone over 13 and is collected by the hotel at checkout.
What is the most expensive "hidden" cost?
Inter-city travel on the high-speed Lisbon–Porto at peak times is €65 one way in summer. Two round trips absorb a full daily budget. Booking the train 2+ weeks ahead drops it to €25–€35.
Can I do Portugal for €50 a day?
Yes, but only inland or in the Algarve off-season, in a hostel or a shared apartment, cooking breakfast and lunch, walking or using public transit, and skipping paid activities. In Lisbon in July, €50 is a hostel bed and a Francesinha — nothing more.
