Portugal holidays to avoid

São João, Carnaval, saints' days — the dates when prices 2× and sites shut. Pick a date, see the impact multipliers for price, queue, and closure.

What this solves

Portugal has 12–14 national + regional holidays per year, plus the saints' day of every city and town. The question is not "is the day off?" — most are. The question is "does this day in this city break the trip?"

The answer is yes for at least 5 days per year. São João in Porto (June 23–24) doubles hotel prices and closes half the restaurants. Carnaval in Loulé or Torres Vedras (announced each February) makes driving impossible. Easter Week (Carnaval + Holy Week + Easter) closes museums on the Sunday and Monday. Christmas + New Year closes nearly everything for 5 days.

This tool scores each major holiday against price, crowd, and closure for the city or region you choose, then surfaces the dates to avoid for your trip.

How to read the result

The result is a list of dates that fall in the chosen month for your region, each scored on three axes:

A "skip" recommendation means at least two axes are above 2.0. A "fine" recommendation means all three axes are below 1.5.

FAQ

Should I avoid São João in Porto?

Not necessarily — it's genuinely spectacular. But if you're a casual visitor who just wants a calm Porto weekend, book around it. Hotel rates 3x normal.

What happens on Easter Sunday?

Almost everything is closed. Public transport on Sunday schedule. Restaurants open but limited. Plan a walking-only day.

Are Christmas / NYE days worth visiting?

Yes for the lights, NYE party, and a quiet Christmas Day. No for the museums — almost all are closed Dec 25, 26 and Jan 1.

Which holidays are the best to visit?

Santos Populares (Jun 12–13) is the most fun in Lisbon. Carnaval in Loulé for the costumes. Santo António in Alfama is the most authentic festival.
