Portugal emergency contacts

112, farmácia de serviço, hospital vs Centro de Saúde, and embassy phones — by district.

What this solves

Portugal's universal emergency number is 112 — it routes to police, ambulance, and fire, with English-speaking support in tourist areas. But "112" alone is not the whole story. Pharmacies close on Sundays and most have rotating on-call duty (farmácia de serviço), which you find on farmaciasdeservico.net. For non-life-threatening issues, the Centro de Saúde (health centre) is the right call; for actual emergencies, the hospital.

The other gap is consular help. Lost passport, arrested, hospitalised: each embassy has its own after-hours line, often routed through the embassy in Madrid in smaller countries. This tool surfaces the most useful numbers by district and situation so you don't have to dig through outdated PDF embassies.

FAQ

Does 112 work in English?

Yes. Operators in tourist areas and main hospitals speak English. The first 30 seconds may be in Portuguese — say "English, please" (inglês, por favor) and they'll route you.

What's the difference between Centro de Saúde and Hospital?

Centro de Saúde = primary care: GP, prescriptions, vaccinations, mild issues. Hospital = emergencies and specialties. For a fever and a sore throat, Centro de Saúde. For chest pain, accident, or anything urgent, Hospital Urgência.

My passport was stolen. What do I do?

1. Report at the local PSP (Polícia de Segurança Pública) or GNR (Guarda Nacional Republicana) station; 3. Contact your embassy for emergency travel documents; 4. Get a cópia do auto (police report) for insurance. The embassy in Lisbon handles emergency docs in 1–3 working days.

What if I'm in a rural area?

112 still works. The closest farmácia de serviço and Centro de Saúde will be 30–50km away. Rural INEM ambulances are well-staffed. For non-urgent needs, ask your hotel / host to call ahead.
