What this solves
Lisbon fado falls into two broad categories. The first is the small casa de fado in Alfama where you walk past the kitchen to your table, where the singer is a local who's been coming for 20 years, and where you pay €10–€20 to enter and nothing if you don't drink. The second is the dinner-and-fade show with menus printed in 12 languages, singers on a rotation, and a €45–€60 minimum that includes a meal you didn't really want.
The first kind is what fado is. The second kind is a packaged tourist experience that exists because there are tourists. Both are fine, but they are not the same thing — and the guides that say "go to a fado house in Alfama" do not distinguish them. This tool helps you pick the right kind, then narrows down which one.

All four inputs change the recommendation.
How to read the result
- Top of list: the venue matching your four answers. If two are tied, pick the one with the friendlier minimum / no reservation.
- "Authentic" tag: small, often without an English menu, locals coming in for one drink and to listen. No guaranteed start time, no table service between sets.
- "Paid" tag: dinner included, scheduled singers, set menus. Comfortable. Not "real" fado in the purist sense but a legitimate introduction.
- "Trap" warning: a venue that's not bad but is over-sold. Sometimes the tourist-trap reviews on TripAdvisor are still right.
Lisbon fado venue reference (2026)

| Tasca do Chico | Alfama | Authentic | ~10 entry | Two floors. Monday amateur night is local and famous. English menu is tiny. Cheap wine, no dinner service. |
| A Severa | Alfama | Authentic | ~15–20 | Named after the first fado singer. Open late. No minimum — order a glass and stay. Local crowd after midnight. |
| Maria Gadanha | Alfama | Authentic | ~12–15 | Less famous than Tasca do Chico, equally authentic. Sometimes with dinner, sometimes not. |
| Clube de Fado | Alfama | Paid show | ~55 | Respected mid-range. Dinner before the singers. Mostly tourist crowd but high musical quality. |
| Faia | Alfama | Paid show | ~50–60 | The first paid-fado restaurant. Consistent quality, polished singers, popular with first-timers. |
| Parreirinha de Alfama | Alfama | Authentic / dinner | ~25–35 incl. dinner | Family-run, almost 100 years old. Dinner is part of the package but not a stage-managed show. |
| Mesa de Frades | Alfama | Authentic / premium | ~50–70 | Azulejo-tiled, small, legendary. Famous singers. Higher minimum but considered "real" by locals. |
| A Baiuca | Alfama | Trap warning | ~30–40 | Was authentic, now heavily touristed. High minimum, scheduled shows, indifferent singing. Walk past. |
| O Século | Alfama | Authentic | ~10–15 | Old-school, locals, no English. Worth the discomfort. |
| Bairro Alto taberna | Bairro Alto | Variable | varies | Bairro Alto has fado but it's mixed with everything else (jazz, bossa nova). Less classic. Great on a quiet weeknight. |
Min spend is per person in 2026. Dinner + show packages price the music as part of the meal.
Limitations
- Personal taste dominates. Some singers you love, some you don't. Same venue, different singer, different experience.
- Authentic houses sometimes have tourist nights and authentic nights. Monday amateur at Tasca do Chico is the "real" night; Saturday is more mixed.
- The line between "authentic" and "trap" is fuzzy. Some venues get sold and quality drops within a year.
- Reservations: small authentic places are often first-come, first-served. Don't show up with 6 people at 22:00 expecting a seat.
FAQ
Is fado in Bairro Alto authentic?
Sometimes. Bairro Alto has mixed-genre houses that include fado. The traditional and classic rooms are in Alfama and Mouraria. If you want the "idea of fado", Bairro Alto is fine. If you want the tradition, go to Alfama.
Do I have to eat dinner?
No — at authentic houses you can have a glass of wine and listen. At paid shows, the dinner is bundled and you can't opt out without losing the table.
Can I see fado for free?
Yes — bars in Alfama have occasional "live fado" nights with no cover. Quality varies wildly; you might see someone famous rehearsing or someone dreadful.
Should I tip the singer?
Yes — passing a €5–€10 note after a song is traditional and expected at paid shows. At authentic houses it's appreciated but not required.
