Coast & Beach

Costa Vicentina vs Algarve

Wild west coast vs beach-resort east — match your week.

What this solves

The south coast (Algarve) and the south-west coast (Costa Vicentina) are 60km apart as the crow flies but feel like different countries. The south coast is sun, calm water, golden arches, restaurants every 200m, and a Strip in Albufeira. The Costa Vicentina is Atlantic swell, surf schools, hiking trails above the cliff, and villages (Aljezur, Vila do Bispo, Sagres) where a restaurant that closes at 22:00 is late.

FAQ

Which coast for a first visit?

The Algarve — Faro / Albufeira for families and food, Tavira for quieter, Lagos for caves. If you have a second week, add the Costa Vicentina for surf and cliff walks.

Is Costa Vicentina kid-friendly?

For older kids who can handle a colder sea and longer car drives, yes. Praia da Amado has a surf school for ages 8+ and a small restaurant. Praia de Odeceixe has a protected lagoon that's good for non-swimmers.

Can I do both in one week?

Yes, but split it 4/3 or 5/2 — not 3/4 with daily drives. Lagos is a clean halfway point: 1.5h to Sagres, 1.5h to Albufeira.

Is the Costa Vicentina actually safer for surfing?

Yes — Praia da Amado and Arrifana are surf schools by design, with safer sandy-bottom beaches and lifeguards. Praia do Tonel is for advanced surfers only.
